Two-thirds believe struggling tenants should withhold their rent to pay other bills during the coronavirus pandemic, a poll has found.

A YouGov survey found 22% agreed people who are “struggling to make ends meet” should not have to pay rent during Covid-19. And a further 45% said renters who are struggling should try to pay their rent, but “there are other essentials that should take priority”.

Just 16% said rent should be prioritised over other essentials and tenants should only stop paying “if they literally cannot afford it”.

The rest picked none of the three options (4%) or didn’t know (13%). The survey of 1,682 British adults from May 7-11 was carried out for the London Renters Union.
