England's chief medical officer Chris Whitty has said there was "reason for optimism for 2021" as giant Pfizer and biotech firm BioNTech's Covid-19 vaccine is championed by top scientists.

While an Oxford professor has echoed Boris Johnson's claims of life returning to normal by Spring 2021 as one of his colleagues hails a "watershed moment" which made him "smile from ear to ear".

Hailed as a major breakthrough in the search for a coronavirus vaccine, the jab from pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has been found to be more than 90% effective.

Professor Whitty tweeted: "Preliminary news that the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine is effective demonstrates the power of science against Covid. Have you got a coronavirus story to tell?
