Coronavirus vaccines to be tested on humans as global cases reach two million

Two experimental coronavirus vaccines have been cleared for clinical trials on humans. China has approved human tests for the new vaccines, state media Xinhua reported today.

It comes as the number of confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide has passed two million according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University.

The vaccines are being developed by a Beijing-based unit of Nasdaq-listed Sinovac Biotech, and by the Wuhan Institute of Biological Products, an affiliate of the state-owned China National Pharmaceutical Group.

In March, China gave the green-light for another clinical trial for a potential coronavirus vaccine candidate developed by the military-backed Academy of Military Medical Sciences and Hong Kong listed biotech firm CanSino
