Covid-19: Electronics industry’s woes won’t end after lockdown

Electronics companies will face difficulties even after coronavirus (covid-19)-related lockdowns end. Factories may struggle to keep up production as daily wage labours and workers have migrated back to their villages due to lack of income. “Even in China, it took them a good two to three weeks to return to normal operations," said Arjun Bajaj, director of Videotex International Pvt Ltd, a television manufacturer.

He said companies will take at least 15-20 days to speed up production, adding that many in the industry are worried about a possibility of labour shortage after the lockdowns are lifted.

According to Pankaj Mohindroo, chairman of the Indian Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), worker migration is not an “acute challenge"
