Brits will likely need to be re-vaccinated against Covid-19, and it could be as often as every year, a top medical chief has warned.

Jonathan Van Tam said the vaccine was “good news” but he didn’t think “we will ever eradicate coronavirus ”. The Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England said he didn’t know if repeat jabs would need to be every year exactly.

But he added: “This virus is going to change anyway over time and we may need to re-formulate these vaccines periodically.” Asked how long a vaccine would guarantee immunity, he told LBC: “How long is a piece of string?

We don’t know that yet. “I would say it’s going to be many months, the vaccine is going to work for, but I’m not basing that on data, I’m basing it on a hunch.” Prof Van
