Scientists studying Germany's outbreak of coronavirus believe Europe could be close to achieving herd immunity already. Far more people have been infected with Covid-19 than previously estimated, a study has revealed, with as many as 15% of Gangelt's residents testing positive for antibodies without symptoms.

Gangelt is a town in the district of Heinsberg, the site of Germany's worst outbreak and known colloquially as the "German Wuhan".

A team of researchers has been using the district as a real-life laboratory, tracking residents to try to understand how the virus spread and what the rest of the country can learn from it.
