COLOMBO (News 1st) – The President of All Ceylon Poultry Traders' Association, Ajith Gunasekara says that there may be a shortage of eggs in the future due to the decrease in the import of hens required for poultry farming.He said that currently, the hens owned by farms are also being sold for meat.The Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera also said that the importation of hens required for poultry production has been reduced from 80,000 to 10,000.The minister said that he is not hopeful about the future of the poultry industry under the current circumstances.Therefore he added that authorities are looking at short-term solutions such as providing the necessary animal feed to keep the poultry industry running and sustain it through means sourced from within the country rather than through imports..
