In an op-ed for the Washington Post (4/14), Michael D’Ambrosio, an assistant director of the US Secret Service and head of its Office of Investigations, and Terry Wade, executive assistant director of the FBI leading its Criminal, Cyber, Response and Services Branch, write, “Swindles, scams and outright thefts have long been features of major disasters,” but “the covid-19 pandemic provides criminal opportunities on a scale likely to dwarf anything seen before.” The officials add, “Law enforcement officials have already learned of offers of sham treatments and vaccines, bogus investment opportunities in nonexistent medical companies and calls from crooks impersonating doctors demanding payment for treatments.” D’Ambrosio and Wade conclude,.
