ORLANDO, Fla. – Large demonstrations in response to the death of George Floyd continue around Florida --and the world -- Tuesday which is a cause for concern to health officials trying to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

According to the latest numbers released by the Florida Department of Health Tuesday, there have been 57,447 positive cases of COVID-19 since the virus first appeared in Florida more than three months ago.

On Tuesday, 70 new deaths were reported from the virus, bringing the state death toll to 2,530. The new fatalities are the largest increase the state has seen yet but the numbers are often delayed by several weeks, according to the DOH.

Oregon city joins others in curbing tear gas, police tactics

SEATTLE – Portland, Oregon, Mayor Ted Wheeler on Saturday ordered the city’s police to stop using a common type of tear gas except as a last resort in life-threatening situations, making it one of several cities that have started restricting law enforcement tactics in response to widespread protests over the killing of George Floyd.Wheeler issued a statement saying he shares community concerns about the use of CS gas, especially during a respiratory-illness pandemic. Critics have called on the Portland Police Bureau to permanently ban the use of CS gas on protesters.“I strongly believe that gas should not be used to disperse crowds of non-violent protestors or for general crowd management purposes,” Wheeler tweeted.

Large crowds march across California for George Floyd

SAN FRANCISCO – Thousands of demonstrators filled the streets in San Francisco, Sacramento, Simi Valley, San Diego, Los Angeles and elsewhere across California on Saturday, continuing more than a week of protest marches expressing outrage over the death of George Floyd.Roderick Sweeney, 49, who is black, said he was overwhelmed to see the large turnout of white protesters waving signs that said “Black Lives Matter” as hundreds marched back and forth across San Francisco's famed Golden Gate Bridge. “We’ve had discussions in our family and among friends that nothing is going to change until our white brothers and sisters voice their opinion," he said.
