Florida's coronavirus death toll surpassed 6,000 today as the disease claimed another 186 lives in its relentless march through the southeast US state, health officials said.
The so-called Sunshine State is now second only to California in its total number of Covid-19 cases with 441,997, an increase of 9,230 from the day before.
The latest cases put it ahead of New York, an early epicentre of the global pandemic which has wreaked havoc in the United States.
Today's death toll was Florida's highest for a single day, although not all fatalities necessarily occurred between yesterday and today.
