Campaigners battling to save free TV licences were handed a fresh boost tonight as Labour's new Shadow Culture Secretary threw her weight behind the fight.
In her first major intervention since being appointed to party leader Keir Starmer's top team, Jo Stevens called for the Government to honour a 2017 manifesto pledge to fund the vital lifeline for over-75s.
Writing exclusively for the Mirror, she said: “ Labour are pushing for the licence fee to be protected indefinitely. “The Government should do the right thing – step in and guarantee free licences for over-75s for good.” Ms Stevens, who previously sat on the Commons Culture Select Committee, became Labour's third Shadow Culture Secretary in six months when she was handed the role.
