Prices for summer trips to Greece, Italy and Morocco are also heavily reduced compared to this time last year, while hopes of an end to the 14-day quarantine for people arriving back in the UK have led to a surge of interest in travel.

Emma Coulthurst, expert at TravelSupermarket, said until recently people were searching for holidays from October. She said: “Now, it is this July, August and September like a normal summer.” But industry experts say many older people are still reluctant to fly.
