Cyntoia was 16 when she was jailed in 2004, after being tried as an adult and given a life sentence - with a minimum term of 51 years - for the murder and robbery of a real estate agent who had met her for sex.

She admitted shooting Johnny Michael Allen but claimed it was self-defence, saying she feared he was going to kill her. If her case was heard today, she’d been seen as a victim of child trafficking, rather than a teenage prostitute.

But since 2017 things have changed for the better. Against all odds she has not only found love with a man she'd previously never met, she has also been granted clemency.
