According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Delta variant has now been identified in 111 different countries - and is contributing to a surge in global cases.

After widespread hopes of a more normal summer, and a much-needed period of economic recovery, many countries are now facing additional restrictions and lockdowns - despite the roll-out of vaccines.

Last week, global deaths climbed after nine straight weeks of decline, the WHO said, and more than 55,000 lives were lost - a three per cent increase from the week before.
