An 102-year-old Italian woman dubbed “The Immortal” made a heroic recovery from Covid-19 following a 20-day stay in hospital.

Italica Grondano was struck down with the killer virus and was raced to Genoa’s San Martino hospital in early March. When she arrived, Ms Grondona was treated for the virus and mild heart failure.

Her doctor Vera Sicbaldi told CNN: “She only had some mild coronavirus symptoms, so we tested her and she was positive, but we did very little.

She recovered on her own.” The elderly Italian’s recovery so impressed doctors that they gave her a nickname. Ms Sicbaldi told the outlet: “We nicknamed her ‘Highlander’ - The Immortal.” The moniker is from the 1986 film about an immortal warrior from the Scottish Highlands.
