In the past few weeks it has become clear that care homes are at the very centre of the current Covid-19 crisis. For almost 10 weeks the Scottish public, including those in Rutherglen and Cambuslang have been following strict lockdown regulations, and as a result our NHS has not come close to being overwhelmed.
But while we have come together to avoid a crisis in our health service, one has been developing in our care homes – hitting our most vulnerable, and those most vulnerable to Covid-19.For weeks myself and colleagues across the Scottish Parliament have been calling on the government to address the serious issues around access to PPE and the availability of testing for care home workers – yet, despite this, these issues remain ongoing.
