Joe Biden officially named Democratic presidential candidate to take on Donald Trump

Joe Biden has officially clinched the Democratic presidential nomination and will face President Trump at the polls. The former Vice-President secured the backing of the 1,991 delegates needed to become the party's candidate earlier today.

Mr Biden - who has been widely expected to become the nominee since Bernie Sanders dropped out of the race in April - will now stand for election on November 3rd.

It comes after the 77-year-old won in all seven US states which held presidential primaries on Tuesday, including Maryland, Indiana, Rhode Island, New Mexico, Montana, South Dakota and Pennsylvania.

In a statement, Mr Biden said the country is "crying out for leadership" as it reels from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and mass protests
