More than a third of motorists have increased their driving in the past month, figures show. Driving association the RAC said 10% more cars are now on the road, compared to the first week of lockdown, when businesses were ordered to close.
In a survey of 1,500 drivers, it found the majority are using their vehicles for food shopping as well as trips to DIY stores, after chains B&Q and Homebase reopened their doors.
It comes as Boris Johnson is set to announce phase two of the UK's lockdown on Sunday - with some measures set to be eased. Vehicle breakdowns are also up by nearly a fifth since week one, the RAC said, despite warnings that non-essential car journeys could mean you're not covered on the road.
