Ministers have 'no idea' if re-opening schools next month will cause a second peak of the coronavirus pandemic. Boris Johnson's plans to send children back to school on June 1 appear to be in chaos after a series of car crash statements from education chiefs.

Osama Rahman, chief scientific adviser at the Department for Education (DfE), said there's a "low degree of confidence" that children spread the virus any less than adults.

And that the department had not seen any scientific evidence supporting putting kids back behind their desks so quickly and was not privy to discussions about teachers' PPE, despite his senior position.
