MUMBAI: India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India Ltd's domestic vehicle sales declined a sharp 48% year-on-year in March owing to the nationwide lockdown called by the government to contain the covid-19 spread.
The company sold 76,976 units in the domestic market against 147,613 units sold in a year ago. Automobile showrooms saw a sharp decline in footfall from 15 March onward amid the coronavirus scare. “The sales during March 2020 are not comparable with sales in March 2019 due to the suspension of operations with effect from March 22nd 2020, in line with national policy," the company said in a regulatory filing on Wednesday.
