Regulations to enforce the compulsory wearing of face coverings on public transport come into effect today. Fines of up to €2,500 as well as a possible jail sentence of six months, are in store for those who refuse to wear face coverings on public transport.
A driver or other relevant person can request someone to wear a face covering. They can ask them to leave a vehicle if they are not wearing one, or refuse them entry.
If a person does not comply, and does not have a reasonable excuse, Gardai could be called. However, unions representing transport workers have expressed concern about how the regulations will be policed.
