A “virtual House of Commons” with ministers in the chamber being quizzed by MPs via video link is to be set up  when parliament returns next week.

The remote gathering of the Commons will allow up to fifty ministers and backbenchers to physically be in the chamber at any one time, with up to 120 others appearing on screens using the Zoom video conferencing app.

The new system allowing the Commons to sit remotely for the first time in its 700 year history will first need to be approved by some MPs physically sitting in the Commons on Tuesday.

Those in the Commons would sit at a distance to avoid any risk of transmitting coronavirus. The first video conference parliamentary event could be prime minister’s questions at midday on Wednesday.Spea
