A mum who says she is terrified of catching Covid is facing prosecution after keeping her daughter off school for two years.

Lisa Diaz says she fears her daughter, Helena, could be in serious danger if she returns to primary school and has not sent her for more than 20 months since the onset of the pandemic, reports Manchester Evening News.

Lisa, from Wigan, says the risk of her catching Covid and long Covid could be severe, so she has kept her daughter home - leading Wigan Council to threaten her with prosecution.Mum of two, Lisa, a member of Safe Education For All, told Good Morning Britain today: "Our concern is that Covid harms children.

We are seeing a record number of hospitalisations of children with Covid.""Independent SAGE said that there have been more hospitalisations in children in the last three weeks than the entire first wave of the pandemic so the narrative that Omicron is mild is just a fairytale."According to UK Health and Security Agency we've had 128 children die from Covid and honestly my greatest fear as a parent is that my children will end up with long Covid."However, the Government says children should be going to school wherever possible, and has committed to keeping schools open. From the start of the pandemic scientists have said the symptoms of Covid in children are much milder than those in adults. And it appears the symptoms of Omicron are much milder than previous variants.Previously it was suggested Omicron could kill 75,000 people in the UK - but so far just 14 deaths have been recorded.

Philadelphia family held captive throughout weekend by armed home intruders, police say
PHILADELPHIA - Authorities say a Philadelphia family was held captive over the weekend by a group of armed intruders who tortured one of the family members and forced withdraws from various banks.Philadelphia Police Captain Jack Ryan told reporters that the situation started Friday afternoon when a 45-year-old man was robbed and "abducted" by three suspects in front of his home on the 4600 block of Decatur Street in Holmesburg.Ryan said the "criminal gang" then entered the victim's home where they held his family of three, including a 10-month-old, captive throughout the weekend. The victim's 68-year-old father and a friend of the wife came to the house from Saturday to Sunday and were also held prisoner by the group. During the weekend, captors forced the man to withdraw a "significant amount of cash" from various banks as his family was being held hostage. Ryan said at one point in the weekend a family member was "tortured" and has since been treated and released from an area hospital. The family was released on Sunday night and immediately called the Philadelphia Police Department. "They're all okay, as well as you can be after undergoing an ordeal such as that," Ryan said. MORE LOCAL HEADLINES___DOWNLOAD: FOX 29 NEWS APP | FOX 29 WEATHER AUTHORITY APPSUBSCRIBE: Good Day Digest Newsletter | FOX 29 Philly on YouTubeAdvertisementFOLLOW: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter
