Nicola Sturgeon says lockdown is not a contest between health and the economy as redundancies rise

Nicola Sturgeon has said the battle against coronavirus should not be seen as a contest between protecting health and protecting the economy.

The First Minister was speaking as new figures revealed the number of Scots claiming unemployment benefits has more than doubled in the last year.

The Scottish Government has faced criticism from the hospitality sector after lockdown restrictions introduced last week saw pubs and restaurants across the central belt forced to close.

Sturgeon admitted many Scots would be feeling as anxious about the economic impact of lockdown as they would be about the threat of catching the virus.The latest unemployment statistics cover the third quarter of the year when the UK Government's furlough scheme was still.
