The number of areas with rising coronavirus case rates has almost doubled in a day. In England 31 of the 315 local authorities saw infection numbers rise in the week leading to January 17.
By way of comparison, during the seven days to January 16, case rates were up in 17 areas. The jump follows days of infections falling in more and more areas, and underlines how the country is a long way from having the virus under control.
Public Health England officials, which releases the data and helps marshal the pandemic response, will want to see case rates fall across the country if daily positive tests results are to continue falling.
