Around one in 14 deaths of people infected with coronavirus could be taking place in the community, new figures suggest. The total number of deaths involving Covid-19 in England and Wales that occurred up to March 27, and which were registered up to April 1, stands at 1,639.
A total of 539 deaths relating to coronavirus were recorded in the week ending March 27 - and 38 (seven per cent) of those occurred in hospices, care homes or other locations rather than in hospitals.
The provisional figures, compiled by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), are the first to give an indication of how many coronavirus-related deaths are happening outside of hospitals.
