A 91-year-old woman died after falling and breaking her leg while shooing away nuisance seagulls. Margaret Davidson was trying to chase away the birds as they tore open bags of rubbish in search of food outside her window, at sheltered accommodation in Aberdeen.

She was found collapsed and in great pain near the bins, and broke her thigh bone in the fall. Mrs Davidson died five days after the accident after developing pneumonia in hospital.

Daughter Vi Alexander, who lives in Lumsden, Aberdeenshire, said she doesn't know how long the “very independent” pensioner lay undiscovered and in pain before she was found and helped up.
