Perth radio star Georgie Williams wins the Volunteers Award at the recent Scottish Health Awards

Perth’s Georgie Williams brightens the days of hospital patients and care home residents with her radio request show.The 28-year-old, who has quadriplegic cerebral palsy and isn’t able to talk unaided, won the Volunteers Award at the recent Scottish Health Awards.Despite needing to use a communication aid, Georgie has become a popular presenter since joining Hospital Radio Perth - now CareSound Radio - and becoming co-host of the Tuesday request show, which now also goes out to care homes in NHS Tayside.Georgie – who was born with a condition that affects all her limbs, her motor functions and ability to speak – tours the hospital in a specially adapted wheelchair.She asks patients for their favourite songs and adds them to her playlist.

She also recently trained to be a mentor to people who use communication aid devices. In addition she helps others – from medical students to taxi drivers – understand people with complex needs and the best way to communicate and assist those with communication aids.She also advises educational staff on inclusion and equality, and how to cater for people with disabilities.Georgie said: “I feel so honoured to receive an award for doing something I absolutely love.
