PHILADELPHIA - After almost 17 years on the job, 39-year-old Philadelphia Fire Captain Lisa Forrest is getting a new title Tuesday while making history as she becomes the city’s first Black female battalion chief."When I came through academy there were no female instructors," Forrest said. "Don’t ever let anybody tell you can’t do anything.

You determine your own destiny."At age 22, an aspiring nurse, Forrest, became a city firefighter when an injury kept her home from Penn State’s ROTC program.Now,  she’s the president of the Philadelphia chapter of the Valiants Club for Black professional firefighters.

A leader rising through the ranks despite meeting naysayers along the way."What I’ve learned is that everybody’s not gonna be nice to.

PHILADELPHIA - A Philadelphia community is rallying together to try to curtail crime and violence that has gripped their once peaceful neighborhood. Melissa Brannon, a 10 year resident of Fairmount, organized a town watch and for that last month has gathered with neighbors to strategize about how to make their community safer.  She was inspired to make a change after a recent spike in crime that included four broad daylight carjackings and a shooting in front of a popular neighborhood bar. Brannon recruited Anthony Murphy, the Executive Director of Town Watch Integrated Services, to lead the training. Fairmount neighborhood watch participants gathered to learn special training.

City of Hamilton’s mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for municipal employees will be staying put for now, despite Ontario’s chief medical officer of health suggesting such policies are no longer required.Dr. Kieran Moore said last week that he thinks the period of highest COVID-19 risk is over and that means workplace vaccination policies are “no longer necessary” and recommended that they be removed by March 1 — the same day the province’s proof-of-vaccination system is lifted.During a media briefing on Tuesday, Mayor Fred Eisenberger said the city will be reviewing the policy but there are currently no plans to lift it.
