Boris Johnson is said to have shelved the idea, moving the focus away from pubs and restaurants and towards travel and large events.

The proposal could have meant that punters would have to show proof of vaccine, or a negative test result, before visiting their local.

A senior Downing Street source told the Mirror no formal decisions have been made yet, but confirmed the focus is on large events and major venues.
