A Spanish holiday hotspot popular with Brits has banned buckets and spades on the beach in order to halt the spread of coronavirus.

Ball games are also forbidden and sun seekers are cordoned into zones along the beaches in Elche, near Alicante. Water sports are allowed in specific areas along the coast.

Shoes will have to be worn at all time whilst on the walkways between zones. And beaches will be open only between 9am to 11pm in order to ensure they can be cleaned properly  overnight.

Each morning, physical markers will be set out to ensure people can keep their distance from each other. And an app will tell visitors how busy beaches are at that moment, in order to discourage overcrowding.
