This new strain of Covid - often called the Indian variant - is believed to be more transmissible than previous versions of the virus and is likely to be behind a sudden increase in new cases.
The infection rate in Bury has increased by 150 percent in the last week and early figures suggest it will continue to rise, although at 43.5 cases per 100,000 people it still remains significantly below neighbouring Bolton's rate of 341.5.
