One of the unexpected consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic is that the closure of some types of businesses has led to struggles in other industries as well.
David Wiens, of Dairy Farmers of Manitoba, told 680 CJOB that his members are dealing with an excess of milk, due to coronavirus-related lack of demand from retailers. “The drop in demand has been primarily due to the restaurant and hotel industry basically being shut down on the food service side, so that’s greatly reduced our demand,” he said.
While consumers continue to buy milk and other dairy products like cheese and butter at a similar pace as they did before the pandemic, Wiens said there’s a lot of uncertainty about what kind of a situation the industry will be looking at going
