Researchers have discovered a new mutation in the coronavirus that weakened the SARS disease – before the epidemic was contained.
Scientists at the US’ Arizona State University took 382 samples from coronavirus patients, and found one viral sample was missing crucial "letters".
The discovery is similar to a mutation in the original Sars virus, which killed thousands in a 2003 epidemic. Only one patient was found to have the mutation, but more cases could emerge – signalling a potential turning point in the coronavirus pandemic.
Dr Efrem Lim said the SARS virus had large deletions in “SS3 proteins”, which is also being seen now. He told MailOnline: “These proteins are not just there to replicate – they are in there to help enhance
