WMO: Weather disasters have increased five-fold over past 5 decades
LOS ANGELES - As wildfires scorch the Western United States and Hurricane Ida leaves behind catastrophic damage across Louisiana, a new report shows weather-related disasters have occurred every day, on average, and have skyrocketed over the past 50 years. According to a comprehensive new report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), global weather, climate or water hazard-related disasters have increased by a factor of five over the past five decades, contributed to an average of 115 deaths and $202 million in losses daily.From 1970 to 2019, researchers found the climate-related hazards accounted for 50% of all disasters, 45% of all reported deaths and 74% of all reported economic losses.WMO said the main driving factors
