PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Police Department's Homicide Unit is investigating a double shooting that left one man dead and another injured in Germantown early Friday morning. According to police, officers responded to a 911 call for a shooting on West Aspley Street just before 1:30 a.m. Responding officers found a 25-year-old man sitting inside an unattended parked Nissan Sedan, authorities say. Medics realized he had been shot and pronounced him dead at 1:47 a.m., according to officials. Investigators say they believe he was shot outside the car but was able to run to get into the car. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESAccording to police, the man did not have shoes on, but one was found inside the car and the other was found outside of the vehicle. A few minutes after officers responded, a shooting victim showed up at Temple University Hospital. The 21-year-old victim was placed in stable condition, according to authorities. Police say he was uncooperative, but investigators found clothing they believe belongs to him at the scene. Seven spent shell casings were found at the scene of the shooting, authorities say. The shooting remains under investigation.

Children living near fracking sites have higher rate of cancer, Yale study finds

(Robert Nickelsberg/Getty Images)A recent study from Yale School of Public Health found evidence of a higher risk of children developing leukemia if they lived near unconventional oil and gas (UOG) developments, also known as hydraulic fracking sites.  The peer-reviewed study published on August 17 in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives found that children who were born and lived near these fracking sites were two to three times more likely to be diagnosed with cancer between the ages of 2 and 7. Researchers observed nearly 2,500 Pennsylvania children, 405 of whom were diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common type of cancer in children, according to a news release about the study. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia, also known as ALL, is a type of cancer that causes mutations in the lymphoid immune cells. The long-term survival rates are high among children who are diagnosed with this type of cancer, however, this puts them at higher risk of developing other health problems and psychological issues, according to the study’s authors. Chemicals released from fracking sites into the atmosphere as well as pollution generated from vehicle emissions at these sites are just a few of the impacts observed in this study, according to the senior author, Nicole Deziel, associate professor of epidemiology at the Yale School of Public Health. "Studies of UOG exposure and cancer are extremely few in number.

HOLLISTER, Calif. - A San Jose fire captain is grappling with an unthinkable tragedy after all three of his children were killed in a car crash Sunday evening.Captain Steve Biakanja of San Jose Fire Station 16 lost his 14-year-old twin daughters Leigh and Lucy, and 12-year-old son Ben, in a crash on Highway 156 in Hollister.The children's mother also died in the crash.Captain Steve Biakanja pictured alongside his children, Leigh, Lucy, and Ben.  According to the California Highway Patrol, the four were traveling in a Tesla on eastbound Highway 156 when, for unknown reasons, their vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and hit a tractor-trailor.Investigators are trying to determine why the Tesla crossed into oncoming traffic.The Carmel Unified School District said that Leigh, Lucy, and Ben were all enrolled at Carmel Middle School and attended Tularcitos Elementary School before that.Superintendent Ted Knight told KION-TV, "Coming back, the second week of school to this news this morning was certainly very tragic and was hard for a lot of staff and students to hear."Knight said the deaths of Leigh, Lucy, and Ben has taken a toll on some of their classmates."Some students did need to go home. Some students are in our wellness center talking to mental health professionals.

Marlon spurell (left), Tahmir Pinckney (center) and Azyear Sutton-Walker (right) have been charged in the quintuple shooting in West Philadelphia.  PHILADELPHIA - Police have identified three of the six suspects arrested and charged in connection with a West Philadelphia shooting that injured five people on Tuesday night. Authorities say the neighborhood was left shaken after nearly 100 shots were fired in a shootout on North 57th Street around 7 p.m. Five people between the ages of 17 and 25 were shot, including a teenager and a 21-year-old who were both shot in the head, police say. RELATED COVERAGEAfter the shooting, police chased a vehicle, which eventually crashed on Farzan Street nearby and three suspects were arrested. Police say one of the suspects ran into a property on the 500 block of Haverford Avenue, where he was arrested and another hid under a trailer near 50th Street and Haverford Avenue. According to authorities, multiple rifles and handguns were recovered in the SUV. Authorities identified the suspects as Tahmir Pinckney, 24, Marlon Spurell, 22, and Azyear Sutton-Walker, 22. The three face a slew of charges, including attempted murder, aggravated assault, conspiracy and related charges. Authorities are still looking for three additional suspects in connection with the shootout, officials announced in a press conference on Wednesday. This is a developing story.
