A town not far from Barcelona has been placed back into lockdown due to a huge spike in coronavirus cases. In the first lockdown of its kind since Spain ended its state of emergency last month, as many as 140,000 residents in Lleida, Segrià, have been ordered to stay in their homes.

Those living in the town, which is 100 miles from Barcelona, have been told they can only leave for food or essential work. Seven nearby municipalities in the Segria region have also been placed into lockdown, with meetings of more than 10 people and weddings banned.
