COLOMBO (News 1st) – The Navy says that a vessel with six sailors, who were engaged in search operations along the southern coast for suspicious vessels, has been missing for about 20 days.Navy spokesperson Captain Indika de Silva said that the sailors left from the Southern Coast on 16th September for the search operation.However, all communication with the naval vessel in question have been broken since 17th September, the Navy spokesperson said.The missing group were identified as sailors attached to the Southern Naval Command.No information about the missing sailors have been received in the operations carried out by the Navy so far

PHILADELPHIA - Investigators with the Philadelphia Police Department have released surveillance video and asked for the public's help to identify two suspects wanted in connection with a shooting in Germantown. Police say the shooting occurred at the intersection of Wayne Avenue and Logan Street on Wednesday around 1:48 a.m. According to authorities, two men dressed in all black got out of a silver sedan believed to be a Nissan maxima before opening fire on a man as he climbed into his vehicle. Police say the suspects then got back into the car and fled south on Wayne Avenue towards Abbottsford Avenue. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESThe victim was shot two times in the back and was transported to Einstein Hospital by officers. Police have not released any additional information about the victim's status. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Philadelphia police at 215-686-8477 or submit an anonymous tip online.

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Police Department has announced the arrest of a second suspect wanted in connection with a deadly shooting near Roxborough High School in September. Philadelphia Police Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore announced the arrest via Twitter on Thursday morning. Police have not yet released additional information about the arrest or the suspect who is now in custody. The second arrest comes one day after police arrested and charged 21-year-old Yaaseen Bivins in connection with the deadly ambush shooting that left 14-year-old Nicholas Elizalde dead. RELATED COVERAGEPolice also issued an arrest warrant for 16-year-old Dayron Burney-Thorn, who is wanted on murder charges in relation to the incident. Police say Elizalde and four other teenagers had just finished participating in a football scrimmage and were walking back to the locker room when a group of five suspects exited an SUV and opened fire on the group in September. According to police, at least 60 shots were fired in the shooting that left Elizalde with a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.

COLOMBO (News 1st) – The Welfare Benefit Fast Track Program ‘Leave No One Behind’ targeting low-income families, which was initiated as per the instructions of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, has so far received 2.3 million applications, according to the Welfare Benefit Board.The applications are being promptly entered into the system through Welfare Benefit Information Units established in 341 Divisional Secretariats throughout the country and as of today (12), 624,714 applications have been entered into the system.It is expected that the 600,000 families that have been downgraded to the low-income category, in the face of the second COVID-19 wave and the economic crisis faced by the country, as reported by the United Nations Development Program, are also eligible to apply for this Welfare Benefit Fast Track Program. This is in addition to the 3.3 million families that are currently receiving welfare benefits or those who are already on the waiting list.Accordingly, it is estimated that 3.9 million families would apply for this social welfare program.

PHILADELPHIA - Police are investigating a shooting that left a teenager critically injured in West Oak Lane on Monday night. At around 6:48 p.m., police responded to the 6500 block of North Smedley Street where they say they found a 13-year-old boy who had been shot multiple times in the head and face. The victim was transported to Einstein Hospital where police say he was placed in critical condition. Authorities say no weapons were recovered, and no arrests have been made. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the police.

NEW CASTLE, Del. - Detectives with the New Castle Division of Police Case Squad have released new surveillance video in an effort to solve a homicide from 2015. Police say the deadly shooting of Kelvin Powers took place on February 11, 2015, at 6:55 p.m. Officers were dispatched to Amstel Drive, part of the William Penn Village Apartments, after receiving reports of a shooting. Investigators say Powers' girlfriend was leaving the apartment with her young son when she was confronted by two armed suspects wearing masks.

COLOMBO (News 1st) – The twenty-second Constitution Amendment Bill is to be debated in Parliament on the 6th and 7th of October 2022.The new constitutional amendment will see the inclusion of some articles that were introduced in the 19th Amendment to the Constitution by the Government of Good Governance.One of these provisions is the dissolution of parliament within two years of being elected.However, MP Dilan Perera speaking to News 1st said that some of the articles that were approved by the Supreme Court are to be amended at the Committee State in Parliament, in a devious effort to increase the period of dissolving parliament to four and a half years.MP Dilan Perera joined the News 1st Ilakkaya program revealed that at the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Justice on Tuesday (4), the Justice Minister had noted that SLPP MPs had made a request to increase the period of dissolving parliament to four and a half years.He reprimanded the ruling faction for making such attempts, adding that these amendments have not been informed to the Supreme Court.
