BARTOW, Fla. - A contract worker assigned to be the spotter for heavy equipment coming in and out of a Polk County landfill was crushed by a bulldozer while using a porta-potty, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.Deputies say a heavy equipment operator, who was also a CertiTemp contract employee, was operating a bulldozer at the landfill while Aaron Henderson,40, was assigned as a "spotter," meaning he was tasked with being on the ground, providing traffic control to incoming and outgoing dump trucks dumping trash within the landfill. Deputies say around 5:10 p.m., the end of a regular workday, the bulldozer driver began to drive his assigned bulldozer up an embankment towards a "heavy equipment staging area" to park his bulldozer for the end of the day. While doing so, the front blade of his bulldozer was elevated 3-4 feet off the ground, and he could not see directly in front of him due to the blade obstructing his view, according to PCSO. Deputies say the driver went up the embankment towards the staging area, and once on level ground, he began to turn his bulldozer and heard a loud crumble.

HARRISBURG, Pa. - Three state-owned universities in Pennsylvania will soon be known as the consolidated Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania after a vote by the State System Board of Governors on Wednesday.The board voted unanimously to make the change involving Bloomsburg, Lock Haven and Mansfield universities, although those previous names will still be widely used — including for logos and on diplomas.The system says Commonwealth University will not be "a public-facing identifier," but rather a background name that will let the three schools legally become a single entity. There will be one accredited institution and a single administration, said state system spokesman Cody Jones.The merger is seen as a way to provide a broader range of programs to students at a time when enrollment has been falling.

STANFORD, Calif. - A candlelight vigil held was held at Stanford University, Wednesday evening for sophomore Katie Meyer – the captain of Stanford University's women's soccer team who was found dead in a campus residence. Stanford police are not releasing Meyer's cause of death at this time, but they say there is no safety threat to those on campus.  Thousands filled Maloney Field, the home of Stanford Soccer, for the vigil, standing silently to remember Meyer.   Meyer, 22, was a senior majoring in International Relations, resident assistant, and team captain and goalkeeper on the women’s soccer team, the university said."Katie was extraordinarily committed to everything and everyone in her world," Stanford said in a statement.

ARLINGTON, Va. - A Northern Virginia substitute teacher was suspended by a public school system for allegedly trying to push Russian propaganda on students.Download the FOX 5 DC News App for Local Breaking News and WeatherFOX 5's Maureen Umeh reports Swanson Middle School officials say the incident happened Friday during a world languages class.The substitute teacher identified as 65-year-old John Stanton allegedly made comments supporting the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Umeh says. After the comments were brought to the attention of Arlington school officials, Stanton was suspended.Umeh reports that in a letter to Stanton, school officials wrote in part, "This request is regarding an allegation of comments made to students during instructional hours regarding sensitive world events with Russia and Ukraine."They continue by saying, "In an effort to provide you the opportunity to discuss the concerns that were presented resulting in your assignment suspension status, please respond within five (5) business days of receipt of this letter that you are requesting a "Petition for Reinstatement".FOX 5 reached out to Stanton who told us via email that in his lesson, he suggested that he understood Putin's logic for invading Ukraine, because it made sense from a Russian national security point of view.Stanton told us that he encouraged the students to seek information sources from both the West and East before forming opinions.Umeh says, in his response to Arlington school officials' letter, Stanton wrote, "It is pointless to petition.
