COLOMBO (News 1st) – More details have surfaced about a headless corpse that was dragged away by a crocodile in Akuressa, in Sri Lanka's south.The presence of Crocodiles in Hulandawa, Akuressa doesn't usually shock the local residents, however, what they saw in the Nilwala River on Wednesday (28) evening, had sent shivers down their spines.Residents of Pathovita in Hulandawa were shocked when they saw this crocodile dragging the headless corpse of a man in the Nilwala river. The crocodile with a headless corpse between its teeth had attempted to come ashore on Wednesday (28) evening, however, it went swam back into the depths of the river after seeing a large crowd on the river bank.Attempts by the area residents to locate the body on Thursday (29) were unsuccessful. The area residents identified the clothes on the corpse being dragged around by the crocodile as those belonging to Palanisamy Aarumugam who was reported missing on Wednesday (28).Palanisamy a father of two was a daily wage earner at a Katupol Plantation. Since his daily income of between  700 to 800 rupees was not sufficient to feed his children he had taken up fishing to make ends meet.What is even more unfortunate was that he had not gone to work on Wednesday (28) due to an injury, and decided to go fishing as he had no other way to feed his children, since his wife too had left them.Arumugam who went fishing to feed his kids never came back.Arumugam was well aware of the threat posed by crocodiles in the river but was desperate as he had no other way to feed his children. The loss of this single parent has now left two small children all alone in this world, with no one to take care of them.

(AP) - A Tennessee kindergarten teacher who police said was kidnapped during a pre-dawn run and then killed earlier this month died from a gunshot wound to the head, an autopsy report released Thursday showed.Eliza Fletcher, 34, had a gunshot wound in the back of the head and also had blunt-force injuries to her right leg and jaw fractures, according to the autopsy completed by the West Tennessee Regional Forensic Center in Memphis."There are two semicircular defects to the skull consistent with a single gunshot to the head with the bullet travelling in a posterior to anterior (back to front) and right to left direction," the report said.Fletcher was running on the University of Memphis campus when she was forced into a vehicle after a struggle about 4 a.m.

PHILADELPHIA - Authorities say two young teenagers were shot while walking down a Philadelphia street Thursday night by a gunman who got out of a vehicle.Officers from the Philadelphia Police Department were called to the intersection of 54th and Willows streets around 5 p.m. for reports of a gunfire. Police found a 16-year-old boy shot once in the side of the head and a 14-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound to the body, according to investigators. The older teen was brought to Penn Presbyterian Hospital and placed in critical condition, police said.

PHILADELPHIA - Law enforcement sources tell FOX 29 that an SUV believed to have been used in a deadly ambush shooting near Roxborough High School has been found. Police have not reported any arrests in the shooting that erupted after a joint high school football scrimmage Tuesday afternoon, killing a 14-year-old boy and injuring four others.SkyFOX flew over a police impound lot in Southwest Philadelphia where a light-colored SUV matching the description of the one connected to the shooting was spotted.The discovery comes hours after the Philadelphia Police Department shared video that shows five shooters emerge from a "light-colored SUV," firing more than 60 shots at a group of teens as they walked down Pechin Street following a football scrimmage.Authorities have released surveillance footage that shows five suspects running down as they fired more than 60 shots at the group of teens.According to police, one of the shooters stood over a victim and continued to fire his weapon, but the gun had run out of bullets. The victims in the shooting range in age from 14-17-years-old. Police on Wednesday identified Nicholas Elizalde, 14, as the only victim in the shooting who died from his gunshot wounds.

OAKLAND, Calif. - Six people were injured in a shooting on an Oakland school campus. Oakland police said the shooting happened on the King Estate campus, which is comprised a cluster of schools — Rudsdale Continuation School, Newcomer high schools, BayTech Charter School, and the headquarters of Sojourner Truth Independent Study.Authorities said two of the victims were found inside Rudsdale Continuation School.According to a spokesman for Highland Hospital, three of the shooting victims were brought to the trauma center. The other three victims were taken to other local hospitals.Authorities said two of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries, a third had non-life-threatening injuries.

CRESCENTVILLE - A 17-year-old girl was killed after she was struck by a vehicle while trying to run from a disturbance, in Philadelphia's Crescentville section.Officials said the victim was at the 4600 block of Roosevelt Boulevard, on the grounds of Excel Academy South, Wednesday afternoon, just before 2 p.m., when the accident took place.The girl was reportedly trying to run away from an assault when she was struck by the driver of a gray Chrysler.Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Small stated police received numerous 911 calls for a large fight and accident at the scene.Fire crews and medics responded to the calls and found the 17-year-old victim laying in the parking lot, unresponsive.Medics rushed her to Einstein Medical Center, but she succumbed to her injuries and died a short time later.The driver of the vehicle, an 18-year-old female, did remain at the scene and is talking with police.Inspector Small said police believe the 17-year-old and 18-year-old did attend the school.Detectives are investigating the accident.

COLOMBO (News 1st) – The latest report from the World Food Program reveals that four in ten housholds in Sri Lanka are consuming inadequate diets.The World Food Program said that the intensifying economic crisis continues to threaten food security, and the persistence of high food and fuel prices has pushed food further out of each. The WFP warned that in the face of inaction, the situation could deteriorate even further.Highlighting the fact that diets are in a precarious state among Sri Lankans, the World Food Program said that four in ten  households are facing insufficient food  consumption, with many consuming far less diverse diets as food prices remain high across the country.To date, WFP has received a total of US$29.35 million from the  governments of Australia, Italy,  Japan, New Zealand, Norway, United States and  Switzerland, as well as from the UN Central  Emergency Response Fund, private sector partners, and multilateral donors. This represents nearly half of its emergency appeal for US$63 million.

BERLIN (FOX Business) - Unprecedented leaks in the Nord Stream energy pipelines connecting Russia to Germany were likely the result of sabotage, Germany argued Tuesday.The Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipeline systems suffered three leaks in a single day on Tuesday, though neither pipeline was operating at the time. Asha Randolph (Credit: Houma Police Department) HOUMA, La. - A mother is accused of throwing her baby off a Louisiana bridge and then trying to rescue him from the water.Houma Police Department accused 30-year-old Asha Randolph of throwing her 18-month-old baby from the Liberty Street Bridge into the Bayou Terrebonne last Friday evening. Police responded to the scene and transported the baby to a local hospital, where he was expected to recover. RELATED: Amber Alert canceled for 15-year-old girl taken following deadly shooting of mother in FontanaAuthorities said a preliminary investigation could not reveal any reason as to why the mother would throw her child off the bridge.They said moments later, the suspect entered the Bayou Terrebonne and pulled the baby from the water while leaving behind two children, ages 6 and 8, inside an unsupervised vehicle. Randolph was arrested and taken into custody on charges of attempted first-degree murder, child desertion, and obstruction of justice. FOX 8 reported that investigators do not believe Randolph was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time.This story was reported from Los Angeles.
