The postponement of golf’s Open Championship this summer is expected to be confirmed in the next few hours. An emergency conference call between Royal and Ancient officials and its counterparts at Royal St George’s, Kent, where the tournament is due to be staged this summer from July 16-19, began at 10am Tuesday morning.
The talks are aimed at deciding whether to put the event back by 12 months - or wait and attempt to squeeze it into the golfing calendar towards the end of this year, if and when the coronavirus outbreak is under control.
The crisis summit comes shortly after England Golf declared that all courses in the country are now off-limits - and that everyone should stay away from playing on them during the current lockdown period.
