Thousands of people were seen waiting hours for food as they queued up for miles down a dirt road in South Africa during the coronavirus lockdown.
The scene was captured in an aerial footage earlier this week and shows the extent of need that South Africa’s economic lockdown has generated among many who even before the pandemic were living a hand-to-mouth existence.
Residents from the neighbouring slums of Mooiplaas and Spruit, on the outskirts of the capital Pretoria, are seen getting in the line after private businesses donated 8,000 hampers.
Food parcels organised by the Tshwane Muslim Community and the Sutherland Ridge, Ikon Park and Westhills business communities were dropped to local charity food banks.
