More than 251,000 dead More than 251,000 people have died of the coronavirus since the pandemic surfaced in China late last year, according to an AFP tally at around midday today.

There have been more than 3,595,970 officially recorded cases spanning 195 countries and territories. The United States is the worst-hit country, with 68,934 deaths out of 1,180,634 cases.

Britain follows with 32,375, then Italy with 29,079 deaths, Spain with 25,613 and France with 25,201. UK toll second highest Britain overtakes Italy to become the country behind the US with the largest single-country death toll.
