The UK's coronavirus death toll has increased by 964, with a record high 55,892 cases recorded in the last day. Thursday's positive test total passes the previous high of 53,135 new lab-confirmed cases, set on Tuesday, by almost 3,000.
It brings the total number of cases in the UK to 2,488,780. The daily death toll of 964 is the second highest of the pandemic's second wave after 981 fatalities were confirmed on Wednesday.
Britain's official toll now stands at 73,512 fatalities within 28 days of a positive test, although the actual total, including death certificates mentioning Covid-19, is believed to be more than 88,000.
