More Ontario health units reallocating COVID resources amid Omicron
COVID-19 testing and contact tracing as cases surge due to the highly transmissible Omicron variant.Niagara Region Public Health said it is beginning to shift resources away from contact tracing to delivering booster doses of COVID-19 vaccines, which it said can “better blunt” the Omicron wave.Growing case numbers are making it difficult for people to access testing in a timely manner, which in turn is delaying the identification of cases for followup, the health unit said.At the same time, Omicron has shortened the time between exposure and becoming contagious, making it less likely health officials can intervene early enough to break the chains of transmission, it said.

South Africa's COVID-19 case drop may show its omicron peak has passed
JOHANNESBURG - South Africa's noticeable drop in new COVID-19 cases in recent days may signal that the country's dramatic omicron-driven surge has passed its peak, medical experts say.Daily virus case counts are notoriously unreliable, as they can be affected by uneven testing, reporting delays and other fluctuations. But they are offering one tantalizing hint — far from conclusive yet — that omicron infections may recede quickly after a ferocious spike.South Africa has been at the forefront of the omicron wave and the world is watching for any signs of how it may play out there to try to understand what may be in store. After hitting a high of nearly 27,000 new cases nationwide on Thursday, the numbers dropped to about 15,424 on Tuesday.

Philly restaurants fear restrictions again due to rise in COVID cases, omicron variant
PHILADELPHIA - Restaurants in Philly are concerned about the possibility of restrictions due to a rise in COVID cases and the omicron variant."I’m just trying to be as hopeful as possible that it works out with the least amount of restrictions at least for the small businesses and restaurants," said Samantha Marrone. She’s been back since June 2020 working the bar at Stogie Joe's Tavern on East Passyunk in South Philly and she doesn't want that to change at all. "Knock on wood I’ve been very lucky but again just I’m doing my best to keep myself as healthy as possible so I can continue to come to work," she said.
