Unfinished coronavirus mortuary at airport already storing dead as usual morgues fill up

Birmingham Airport is now receiving the bodies of victims killed by the coronavirus. Part of the facility has been completed and is now being used for storage as deaths due to coronavirus in the West Midlands increase, wth local mortuaries already reaching capacity.

There were 113 deaths linked to coronavirus in the West Midlands on Tuesday, taking the total in the region to 912. Work started at the site on March 27 and the facility is nearing completion and is expected to be ready by next Friday April 17, West Midlands Police said in a statement.

Those who have to arrange funeral are also being asked to not delay and those who cannot attend will be able to watch cremation services via video link.
