The Galway City Central Local Electoral Area has the highest 14-day incidence of Covid-19 in the country with 767.7 cases per 100,000 people in the two weeks to last Monday, 1 March.
This is 3.8 times higher than the national average which was 201.2 cases per 100,000 people on that date. However, Galway city's high disease incidence rate still represents a very significant improvement compared with the previous Monday, when it was as high 1,300 cases per 100,000 people following a rapid increase that occurred in the preceding two weeks.
It is understood that the large student-linked outbreak in the city that went on to infect more than 200 households and 440 people, highlighted yesterday by the Director of Public Health in the region,
