Almost 140,000 cases and more than 6000 deaths have been reported to WHO from the Eastern Mediterranean so far.The epidemic in the Islamic Republic of Iran now appears to be waning, but most other countries in the region are seeing increasing numbers of new infections every day.

While we are not yet seeing the explosive outbreaks that have been a feature of the pandemic in Europe and North America, cases are doubling every 7 to 8 days.
