An Altrincham-style makeover of Bury Market could alienate loyal shoppers, a councillor tasked with redesigning the market has warned.
Bury Council has agreed to spend £50,000 to develop a masterplan for the market which includes drawing up a business plan for a new indoor hall.
One popular idea is to follow the example of Altrincham, which created a new indoor food hall in 2014 with a selection of small independent traders.
The market is credited with transforming the town's fortunes, and making it a foodie destination. But Bury's Markets Task Force chair, Coun Jane Black, said the council, which owns the market, can't assume the same thing would happen in Bury.
