An acclaimed author, described as a “true renaissance man”, has died from coronavirus. Award-winning Carl Tighe, 70, died on May 8 after several weeks in hospital battling Covid-19.
The highly respected professor, from Didsbury, was best known for his fiction but also enjoyed a career as a renowned authority on Eastern European politics and literature.
A former University of Manchester lecturer, Carl also became the first Professor of Creative in the UK at Derby University, where he taught until his retirement in 2015.
But his path to success was not all smooth. In fact, when Carl penned his first novel Burning Worm - based on his own experiences in Poland at the end of the Cold War - it was turned down by more than 30 publishers.
